What exactly is sexuality? For some people it is a really big deal and yet for others it is not so much. Sexuality is basically the way you feel and your sexual preferences, whether it be for one person, many people, men, women, both or even more. It is the thing that defines you as a person and in a world where sex is in front of our faces each and every day; there has never been so much pressure to work out what sexuality bracket that you fit into.
It shouldn’t matter whether or not you are gay, straight, bisexual, and asexual or anything else in between but it would seem that in today’s society, the sexuality or sexual preferences that you choose upon has a very big impact on the rest of your life and this is very often the case for those that claim to be homosexual.
There has been increased hostility towards those that are gay or lesbian throughout the history of our society, and in days gone past, it is not unknown for people to believe that homosexuality was a mental disorder and that those claiming to be this way inclined were locked up in hospitals and other such places to be considered for treatment. This is an incredibly primitive way of looking at things and thankfully, this is not so much the case, although people still refuse to accept these sexuality choices as normal.
Some people choose to ignore the topic of homosexuality completely while others will dismiss it as a silly phase, but whichever way you look at it, sexuality is something that is pushed into our faces every day or every week or every year. How many times have you walked down the street and seen a couple hand in hand, kissing or exchanging sweet nothings? This is blatant broadcasting of sexuality and yet people do not seem to have a problem with this if it is with regards to a mixed sex couple. As soon as you put a same sex couple into the occasion, uproar is caused.
Coming out of the closet is a tough decision for any gay or lesbian person to make and for some this is a decision that takes years to come. Look at how many celebrities that we see every day in the papers, on TV and in films that have recently come out? There would be no problems if a male actor and a female actress claimed their love for each other, but if it were two females or two males, the reaction would be somewhat difficult and in a world where we are meant to be open minded with freedom of movement and speech, the reactions almost seem Medieval.
At the end of the day it doesn’t matter what your sexuality is or what sexual preferences that you have as long as you are comfortable in your own skin and have pride in what you are doing. Safe sex is the most important thing regardless of what sexuality you claim yourself to be.
